News On My Mother Post Surgery Complications Showing up again – and Apologies

Update 3/15/13:

My Mother is now in the Rehab Center, in a room where she can see her favorite nurse there, that is the good news.

The bad news, the feeling/movement went away about a day after after surgery. It’s official now, Mom is a paraplegic, she had 2 weeks to start feeling her legs, by the doctors figures. My Mother is now  numb from the lowest ribs down for 2 weeks now and we must face all the fact that she will be a paraplegic for the rest of her life. She and Dad must face trials they shall have to face for her disabilities. From being in the wheelchair, to being catheterized and carrying a bag for urine to diapers for the rest of her life. Her Sewing on her machines (which the adores will be a problem without feet to operate, no driving etc). This is going to be a time of mourning the loss of use for half of her body and dealing with difficulties as she/we learn to adjust to her newest disability… her artwork with her hands, thankfully she will continue and will be a MUST for her to work with to escape her new situation. We, are all greatly saddened by this.

As of late last night, we received the news of Mom’s Complications being back again. We are preparing ourselves for the worst and hoping for the best.

First let me start off with one of my apologies at the top here (the other one will be at the bottom of my post). I apologize for my lack of tweeting, posting on facebook and adding more to the blog at this time. I promise you all, I am going to resume my reviews and giveaways here very soon. First, I am waiting on the Blog’s Grand Opening for the whole Month of March, for some really fabulous Reviews and Giveaways. Secondly, I may not be tweeting or posting much for the next day or two as I catch up more people on the latest & I await some hopefully good news.

I have had a roller-coaster ride today with news on my Mother’s surgery, good news about the my Mother, she made it through surgery. Then bad news, machines were showing that she was not receiving the readings she should have to her legs, so fear was she’d become a paraplegic. Then the news that as she was able to move her toes on both feet ever so slightly, so maybe paralyzed from surgery and maybe not. Then the great news that she could feel the doctor as he touched her legs. Now as she is out of recovery, my family received the message below from my Father…

Quoted from my Fathers email:

Please keep the prayers coming.  She is completely out of the anesthesia now.

As expected she is in a world of hurt and things seem to have changed for her legs.  She can barely wiggle her left toes.  Right ones don’t seem to work at all and she has no feeling in either leg or foot now.

There is some swelling in her back and the doc hopes the problem will leave as that reduces, but no guarantees.  He says it may take a week or …

As may be expected she is terrified.  Will spend a few days or more in the ICU.

I had a good cry finally while talking to my Sister on the phone, so nice to hear from her, it seems she read Dad’s email at the same time as I have. I have been near tears most of the day here.

I apologize and I am sorry that I started my post out the way I did for my “Day of Prayer” post and possibly the other posts as well. I understand, after talking to my Sister about what happened today, that it could have been misconstrued as to the meaning of those posts and stopped many people cold right there, as people may have thought I was pushing religion on them and they quit before reading what all I had to say… quite understandable. I am so sorry, this was not my intention.

I wish for you all to know that I never wished to push the people that quit “liking” my blog on Facebook away, nor did I intend to push religion on anyone (visa vi my mention of prayer in my posts, where I did try to include everyone in the posts by just asking for caring thoughts as well). I am easy going and never judge people for their beliefs, religion or anything like that.

I am so sorry for those I offended, honestly I was just posting out of fear for my frail Mothers well being and hoping that I selfishly may feel some support today, as I really love my Mother and have been finding it difficult to see her go through so much.

I am so thankful for the outpouring of care, sympathy and support by several of my readers. And I am so very thankful too for the many of you that have stuck by my side while I go through this right now… Thank you everyone. And thank you for putting up with my rambling in this post, I wrote this late at night and today I don’t have the energy to rewrite it, or add pictures… as you can guess it was a very hard night to get any sleep.

Love and hugs,

Mariah

Please Continue Prayers for my Mother – Surgery is Over with Complications

Edit 3/13/13: The feeling/movement is gone and she is once again a paraplegic, she had 2 weeks to start feeling her legs, by the doctors figures. This is going to be a time of mourning and trials as she/we learn to adjust to this new life challenges… her artwork with her hands, thankfully she will continue and will be a MUST for her to work with to escape her new situation. We, are all greatly saddened by this.

Edit: 4:23pm (Mountain Time): New UPDATE to the update: Good news folks, my Mother can feel her legs now when the doctor touches them! Yay!!!!

This is a short update here:

My Mother is out of surgery, it went well and she is doing well (all things considered). However there are complications, the signals to her legs weren’t/aren’t there. But she could wiggle her toes very slightly… she could be a paraplegic if things don’t improve. My Father, Rick and I believe that if they hadn’t dong the surgery she would have become a paraplegic… we hope and pray that this is only a temporary setback as she could slightly wiggle those toes.

The mass that they thought was an encrusted area of infection was the damage to the surrounding tissues from her vertebrae that had disintegrated.

Please, continue to keep my Mother in your thoughts and prayers, as she heals. God bless her and give her great strength through this difficult healing process. And God bless my father and the friends that made it out to the hospital to help distract my father during the long surgery today.

Mom is so loved, when we went to the Local American Legion, I had to take a picture of her, Dad and Mom’s Admirers.

I am going to arrange a way to come up and stay with Mom and Dad for a week or so to help out, when Mom gets out of the hospital… it’s the least I can do.

A Day of Prayer for Me – Mother in Surgery

vintage girl and dog praying
I am saying my Prayers for my Mother.

This may turn some people off, but I really don’t care if it does… I am Catholic and I believe in the power of prayer. I am not going to tweet out giveaways or my reviews today, I am spending my time in prayer for my Mothers surgery today.

Mom is so loved, when we went to the Local American Legion, I had to take a picture of her, Dad and Mom’s Admirers.

I did however choose to write about this today, my Mother is quite frail right now at 71 lbs at last weighing in. She can hardly eat, she has chronic pain, chronic fatigue and an autoimmune disease, along with a hospital borne infection (she got infected a few years back in surgery in her back and the infection lingers on as it is resistant to antibiotics). The infection  had spread to her bones, as they discovered in her Month in the hospital, late last year into Mid January. The infection had not been responding to the antibiotics that could help control the infection (not cure it).

Now comes February and she is back in the hospital, the pain in her back was serious enough to bring her in. They found that some vertebrae above the ones worked on years ago, above the pins and fusions and by the infection, were gone and now they too need surgery.

A picture of my Mother, pre drastic weight loss and a few years back.
My Mother in better times, on prednisone in the picture, and a few years back.

As they decided whether or not to operate, they discovered that the infection was possibly encapsulated since the infection was not responding. So my Mother and Father were told of the concerns of doing surgery while she is so frail, but they decided to go through with it and hinted to Mom (she caught the hint) that she needs to be in good spirits and may have to fight to survive this.

They are operating today and I called my father (we are snowed in at home here) who, thank God has a friend who is in the waiting room with Dad keeping him company. I called at just the right time as they had just stopped in and said that she is doing well, the surgery is going well, however it will be quite some time yet before the surgery is through. They are attempting to scrape the infection away and out of her, I pray they do that exact with a steady hand as I pray it doesn’t spread the infection. Mom wasn’t sure what exactly they would do pins or fusion or cadaver vertebrae or what, so that frightened her somewhat, not knowing what is going to be done.

Mom's Superhero's Not All Wear Capes
This is my Mother, a true Superhero, without a cape. 6 wonderful kids (well with me, it’s debatable) and all brought up well with the Superhero, my Mother.

I am praying for exacting steady hands of the surgeons and wise choices for my Mother back. I am praying today for my Mother to continue being the inspiration that she is and continue to fight her way to good recovery and health.

Susan Howard Designs – Comfort Wear Necklaces Review & Giveaway

I would like to introduce you to Susan Howard Designs, she has designed a beautiful line of jewelry that she calls her Comfort Wear and when you read the statements on the jewelry you will know just why the name is perfectly suited. This woman has been truly touched by the hand of God in her life and her calling to share her creations with us.
Closeup of the Overcoming Difficulties Dear Lord you have seen my anger and my tears you know my heartach and my fears I will trust in you forever more grant me eagle wings so I may soar.
Overcoming Difficulties the back, a beautiful prayer.

I was fortunate enough to have been asked by Susan to receive a piece of her jewelry to review as my partner Joan had suggested it. I feel so fortunate to have this beautiful piece of jewelry and mine is the comfort necklace dedicated to “Overcoming difficulties”… as some of you know I suffer from Chronic Pain from Fibromyalgia, Lupus SLE and herniated discs in my neck and in my lower back. As a result of this, though I try to remain positive and hand my pain up to God, it does get very frustrating and it’s impossible to know from one day to the next what just how bad my pain level will be.

The statement on the back of the necklace spoke to me (see the pictures) and so when my blog partner, Joan came to me and let me know that Susan and her would love to have me review one of Susan’s faith inspired, Sterling Silver Necklaces, I knew exactly which necklace would help. The necklace helps to remind me that no matter how alone I feel God is always with me and knows my suffering and frustrations.

The necklace arrived in a beautiful box… and as I opened the box I realized that not one picture would EVER do these beautiful works of art justice! Maybe a part of that for me is also the sentimental value that such a remarkable gift was made with such thought and giving to me knowing what I go through each and every day for over 25 years of my life…. but to me it’s one of the most beautiful pieces of jewelry that a person could ever own. A reminder of the Lord above and for the memorial comfort jewelry a reminder of those we’ve loved and have passed on. A prayer of sorts for them and comfort for us.

These would make perfect gifts for yourself and loved ones who have lost someone and is having a rough time dealing with their lose. Remember this shop too for friends and family that are experiencing difficulties in their lives, whether is be sent to them with a sympathy card as gifts for family planning a funeral or any of life’s difficulties.
