Organic Matcha Green Tea Powder – Review & Cupcake Recipe

Disclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial.

I was asked to review Organic Matcha Green Tea Powder made by Kiss Me Organics, and I couldn’t have been more excited. I love trying out my ol’ taste buds on something new and different for me, not to mention that I love to create my own recipes as well.

KissMe Organics Front View of Organic Matcha Green Tea packageI had some unusual products made with Green Tea in the past year, one of which was Green Tea Ice Cream, something that I was curious about but wouldn’t have bought ot for myself for the fear that I wouldn’t like it (we are all watching out pennies now a days, aren’t we?) When this review was offered up I couldn’t help but sign up for this review to see what I could make with it and see if I would like it.

I wanted to learn more about this green tea powder, it’s uses and benefits. I already knew one thing about green tea, it is a very good antioxidant. Being an antioxidant, I had heard that green tea, itself, helps to prevent cancer. Since my husband had Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma & bladder cancer… we’ve had more green tea around the house, hoping that my husband and I could benefit from drinking it.

Reading the label on the Organic Matcha, I learned a lot about this product, the benefits, some of the uses and more.

Some benefits listed on the label:

Anti Aging – All Day Energy (Energy Booster) – Metabolism Boost (Calorie Burner) – Increase Focus – Improve Skin Health – 137X Antioxidants of Brewed Green Tea

At first I just thought the matcha was going to be a form of an instant tea. When I saw the pretty green cupcake on the label, and the mention of baking, my brain started running wild with what Flavors would taste good with the Green Tea. Being cautious with the taste-buds in my household, I thought that a sweet cupcake was the best idea indeed… so at first I thought I would find a combination of Honey and Lemon.

A neighbor had recently introduced me to “Cake Mix Cookies” and told me how simple they were to make. So I decided to play around with a Cake Mix (I chose yellow) for an easy cupcake recipe. I was surprised that my first attempt at this was highly successful! My husband and I both loved my creation (recipe coming up).  I even decided to share 5 of my cupcakes with the neighbors, they all seemed to really like it. One even commented that they would give it an 8 out of 10 but, if I brought more over I would get a 10! lol

The frosting I made for this Green Tea Cupcake was also a hit and we found it added some more fruity sweetness to the cupcakes (this recipe is coming up too!) This just goes to show you how very excited I am to use a product when I create my own recipe just for the review.

I take the risk of posting my creation for all of you my beauties, as well as for  the company that supplied the product (If post my recipe, all I ask for is a link back to my blog in exchange for sharing my recipe). I really can’t wait for some of you to try to make this and let me know what you think of my invention… at the same time I have nervous excitement, after all, it’s my baby and I am setting out into the big wide world to be used and judged by others.

Again the idea for this Cupcake came from a friend telling me about her Cake Mix Cookies & hearing how they just add things to the cake mix cookies to make new and different flavors.

Preheat Oven to: whatever your cake mix recommends for cupcakes & your pan color. (I usually turn down the oven by 25 degrees when it’s a dark pan.)

Mariah’s Lemony, Green Tea Cupcakes:

  • 1 Cake Mix – white or yellow (I used yellow Generic Cake Mix)
  • 1 Large Lemon or 2 Small Lemons – you will be using the Lemon zest & the juice. (I used 2 small lemons, as the only cost me about 54 Cents each and a large Lemon was almost 2 dollars)
  • 1 to 2 Tablespoons of Organic Matcha Green Tea Powder (I used 2 Tablespoons, but next time I may cut it down to 1, some people weren’t to sure about the green tea aftertaste… personally I liked it).
  • 1 teaspoon Lemon Extract (Optional) I had decided, by smell, that I wanted to add even more lemony kick to the cupcakes
  • & Misc. ingredients called for on cake mix – (I used 3 eggs and the 1/3 Cup of Canola Oil).

1) Lightly Zest your Lemon(s) into a small bowl – (making sure not to get the white part in the zest.)  I set the bowl with the Zest & the Zest tool aside .

2) Squeeze out the Juice of your Lemon(s) into your liquid measuring cup. Add enough water to liquid measuring cup to equal the water amount called for in the Cake Mix instructions.

3) In the small bowl of lemon zest, pour your Lemon-Water Mix over the zester into the bowl (so as not to waste any of the flavor filled zest).

4) With Mixer on very low speed, slowly add your ingredients to the cake mix, scrape the sides of the bowl and once mixed well turn up the blender to the mixers cake setting (on my mixer, that is about Medium speed).

5) Place in Oven, the Cupcakes will be done when a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean

Once the Cupcakes are cooled you can frost them.

Mariahs Easter Inspired Cupcakes looking downMariah’s Blackberry Buttercream Frosting

For this frosting I was inspired by Wilton’s French Buttercream Frosting Recipe

3/4 cup of Frozen or fresh Blackberries (blend this up well in your blender, if you wish you may strain the seeds out in a fine mesh strainer) <— I have an excellent blender and so I didn’t need to strain the seeds out, you could hardly detect them.

  • 2/3 Cup sugar
  • 1/4 Cup flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 Cup Frozen Blackberries Blended (Optional: you can put through a fine mesh Sieve to get rid of the seeds, I didn’t)
  • 1 Cup butter , softened
  • 1 teaspoon Pure Vanilla Extract

Place sugar, flour and salt in saucepan and mix thoroughly, stir in Blended Blackberries. Cook over medium heat and stir constantly until very thick. Remove from heat and pour into a medium mixing bowl.

Cool to room temperature. Add 1/2 cup butter at a time (cut into several pieces) and beat at medium-high speed until smooth.

Add vanilla and beat well.

Chill icing for a few minutes before decorating.

HINT: For Easter Cupcakes, like I made, add some jellybeans! Nummy!

Iced cupcakes must be refrigerated until serving time.

Have Pill Box, Will Travel – Review

Disclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial.

Sabi logI was lucky enough to receive a Travel Pill Box to Review.. this pill box is a Holster Clip & Go Travel Pill Box by Sabi sold on Amazon. As many of you know I am disabled with health problems, as a result of these health problems I have medications that I need to take several times a day. Whenever I go anywhere for the day or during the hours that I need to take my medications. I have needed to find a way to bring my medications with me on many occasions.

My Experience Before Receiving This Travel Pill Box from Sabi

In the past there has been occasions in which I have forgotten to bring my medications along with me. And/or I would be out for a longer period of time than I anticipated and so I wouldn’t have enough of my medications along with me.

I had used the daily part of my weekly medication pill box, in the past, however my new purse wouldn’t accommodate this daily portion, as my purse has fairly large spaces on both sides of the zipper. Worse yet the little container would pop open and I would end up digging in my purse for the medicines as they were loose in the bottom of my purse as a result.

My next solution was to place the little daily portion container in a ziplock bag. When that didn’t work to well, I started using little candy container to place my medications in, and I kept a supply in my purse for those “just in case times.” This seemed to work out fine, but after a while I realized that the medications were getting knocked around too much and the longer the medications stayed in the container the more breaking apart of the tablets became noticeable. Besides if I were in a movie theater or somewhere that I could not take my time, it was a pain to take out exactly what medications I needed.

Along came this Holster Clip & Go Travel Pill Box to the rescue!

Sabi pill box and box

I can place each of my medications into the separate 3 areas and have enough for one full day, since I take my most of my medications 3 times daily.

With the clip on this handy little travel pill box, I am able to clip it to my purse and not worry about the pill box falling out. I can also just slide open the pill box to remove the exact pills that I need to take and I don’t have to worry about digging around in my purse. Nor do I have to worry about swallowing pocket fuzzies with my medication… yes I admit it, I have gone so far, in the past, as to put my medications in my pants pocket.

Sabi pill box and the purseThe Quality of the Sabi  Holster Clip & Go Travel Pill Box, In My Humble Opinion

Pill Box in Pilot PocketThis BPA-Free pill box feels quite sturdy and so far, for almost a month of usage, I have not had a problem with it pulling open on me, and it is easy for painful hands, like mine, to slide open and close. I imagine that those with Arthritic hands would be quite pleased with this little pill box’s convenience and ease of use. I was able to fit into the compartments, 4 pills in all… and 2 of the pills are not small but rather large “horse pills” to me.

This pill box is just a part of the offerings by Sabi, as a matter of fact this is the smaller version of their HOLSTER grande pill box, so there are more options at Sabi for you to choose from. I like this smaller version, as it easily fits into my little purse, it would also fit into your pockets and taken where ever you go, I can see using this for airplane trips too!

Please tell me you missed me, and tell me you forgive my absence.

I really don’t want to bore you all with all the health details and what lumps and bumps I’ve been experiencing… so I will make this Return of the Absentee Blogger brief, stating that I have chronic pain, lumps in a breast (one is over an inch and a half), Fibromyalgia, Lupus SLE, bulging discs, pinched nerves in neck and lower back (spinal stenosis). I am trying to deal here friends, I have gotten x-rays, an mri, ultra sounds, and more, finally resulting in my getting a Pain Doctor and soon a Neurologist to address the issues with my arms, hands and legs… and dizziness. I am also very uncomfortable with “the change”(perimenopause) with a ton of hot flashes and yet not wanting to take the hormones due to history of breast cancer in my family.

Essentia Hydrating Water – Review & Giveaway

My Introduction to Essentia Super Hydrating Water:

Hi all, I was contacted, a while back, by Essentia Water, a Company that produces bottled water with properties that are very new to me, as they say it’s Super Hydrating Water. When they told me some about their water in their request for a review and giveaway on my blog, I couldn’t help but say “Yes.”

Essentia water logo super hydrating water

What was it in their email invite that captured my attention?

Here are some quotes from the email that I received:

“Essentia is the No. 1 selling bottled water in the natural foods channel and is sold nationwide in retailers like Whole Foods. After reviewing your blog, it seems like a great fit your audience…”

“Essentia is different from other high pH brands and the enhanced waters that simply add minerals to their water. Essentia removes acidic ions and increases the alkaline earth minerals resulting in an optimal higher pH of 9.5 and therefore faster hydration. Drinking Essentia can neutralize the body’s acidic condition and restores it to a more balanced state. High acidity can result in loss bone density, muscle and strength and can impact critical organs like the kidneys.”

“Essentia is the No. 1 selling bottled water in the natural foods channel and is sold nationwide in retailers like Whole Foods. After reviewing your blog, it seems like a great fit your audience…”

Of course I was flatterted that they found me online ad decided to contact me via my blog to do a review, that was a a big plus for me. 🙂

Isn’t water just water?

Next, being skeptical I did my research reading the fact sheet that they enclosed in their email and highlighting what sounded interesting and the questions that I had. I then did my research online, all before replying, after all water? Why is this water so special, how do I go about reviewing water?

Is the pH truly beneficial or just some snake oil being sold for just being unique? Well my reading the fact sheet that was sent to me by Essentia Water, and with my research online, I found that the product may just be truly beneficial in so many ways.

essentia water picture of the sizes that are soldI want to share with you some of the interesting information that I garnered:

(from my reading their fact sheet and online research online.)

The Fact Sheet from Essential Water:

While reading the fact sheet I learned about this process being first developed in Japan, and that in the 1960’s “Functional Water” had been approved for Medical Therapeutics by Japan’s Ministry of Health and Rehabilitation. And in 1997 Essentia acquired the rights to use the proprietary technology. Upon acquiring the rights, they improved and refined the process for mass production, using a process called Ionic Separation Technology (IST). The improved Technology results in “ultra-pure, non-source dependent water, using a special electrolyte formula and electrolysis process to produce an ideal pH.

Direct Quotes from their Fact Sheet:

Most bottled waters have a pH factor of 7.0, which is neutral. Most human bodies are in a highly acidic state due to factors like stress, diet and harmful environmental contaminants. Over time, a high level of acidity can result in a loss of bone density, muscle strength, and can also negatively impact critical organs such as the kidneys.

Consuming an optimally alkaline, high-pH water helps to neutralize the body’s ongoing acidic condition and restore it to a more balanced state. Conventional thinking in health and wellness community is that disease and infection cannot live in an alkaline environment.

Okay interest is peaked:

But what sort of Therapeutics do others have to say about this?

I found some online information (at: http://detoxifynow.com/water_conference.html) from a 2001 Water Conference at Columbia Univeristy about the what health conditions that this sort of water is reported to help out:

A brief scan on this information in their Conference got me hooked and here is a quote:

The Japanese and Russians have used electrolysis in combination with ion separation to produce functional waters with a wide range of beneficial properties for over 200 applications [4, 5]. For example, since 1966 the Japanese have been drinking electrolyzed alkaline water to increase and enhance calcium absorption. Approximately 15 million Japanese now drink this water.   The Japanese Ministry of Health and Welfare has certified that alkaline electrolyzed water (a reducing water) assists in the alleviation of gastrointestinal disorders, acidosis, chronic diarrhea, and poor digestion.

I also read in the information from the conference how importance of hydration & how functional water may help:

There is Functional Medicine and Functional Food, so why not Functional Water. Functional water can be defined as water that produces a positive health benefit. If we look at the basic functions of water in the body, such as solvent, lubricant, nutrient delivery, waste removal, and most of all, enabling almost all key biological processes (i.e., life), it is clear that water produces a positive health benefit. One example of an historical version of functional water is the mineral water used at spas for internal and external health benefits. Another example is the addition of fluorides to drinking water, which is supposed to produce a positive dental benefit (when calcium fluoride is used, not sodium fluoride, which is the chemical used mostly by local water companies). Not everyone agrees that fluoride in any form is beneficial.

If we want to see the health benefits of water, just look at what the lack of sufficient water in the body (dehydration) can cause [2]:

  1. Increased risk of kidney stones.
  2. Increased risk of urinary tract cancers.

  3. Increased risk of colon cancer.
  4. Increased risk of breast cancer

Some people feel that many of our health problems are due to chronic dehydration, and that proper hydration alone would cure many of our common diseases [3].

Okay enough of the research now… I don’t want to bore you, but I am naturally curious about products like this and being a skeptic, I had to know what I was getting into. Though you may find the above boring and too technical it helped me decide to give it a whirl and I suppose a few people only may want to know this information as well and so I’ve done the research for them.

Now, let me tell you about my experiences with Essentia Hydrating Water.

Blog Size Day 1 painting bird with Essentia Water Refilling my Essentia water bottle with larger Essentia Water
Day one while painting the birdhouse in some terrible heat. I refilled my smaller size bottle with the larger size of Essentia Water.

I drank my Essentia Water, while doing yard work outside and sitting in the “Man Cave/Storage” area of our garage. Trust me the dry heat here in Colorado can be very dangerous, you don’t know you’ve over done it on these hot days, such as that days I drank the Essentia Hydrating Water. My house and our separate garage that contains the “Man Cave” don’t have any cooling, other then fans. As a result of not having any cooling and my health issues, I get dehydrated easily, especially on the days that I drank my Essentia Water, when the temperatures reached well over the mid 90’s.

What did I notice with Essentia Water while I drank it?

Well first off, I noticed the flavor, the flavor is much like the wonderful flavor of the water up at my Mom and Dad’s house in the mountains, where their water is from a natural spring that goes into their well. I have often said that, when there is plenty of water in their well (through the droughts they get it filled by another source) I will bring up a 5 gallon carboy and fill it with their water for me to drink. The taste cannot be described but I know it’s full of natural minerals and so tasty!

Day 2 painting with Essentia Water Refilling my Essentia water bottle with larger Essentia Water
Day 2, still working on my painting the birdhouse, and still drinking Essentia Water. It helped on day 1, and continues to help me deal with the extreme heat.

I also noticed that while I was drinking it, that I didn’t get sick from the heat, I avoided dehydration better then I do with regular water, when I can drink regular water until I fill myself up with it and still get sick from the heat. I found that I can drink less water and keep myself hydrated. Of course I also had the option of those sports drinks to hydrate myself, but they are filled with terrible tasting stuff. Besides as a Representative of Essentia told me:

Essentia goes through a 3-step process that infuses your body with electrolytes and minerals that are filled with calcium, magnesium, sodium and and potassium Plus, it tastes great!

My thoughts… well… it does, taste great and it helped keep me hydrated! 🙂

Day 2 Later painting with Essentia Water Refilling my Essentia water bottle with larger Essentia Water
Day 2, later at night, even another refill of Essentia Water into my bottle and still enjoying not becoming dehydrated. Yay, it works and I love the taste!

We all know how important it is to be hydrated and I have now found something that not only tastes great but seems to work well with saving me from dehydration with my work done inside the house and outside, even in the cooler area of the Man Cave/Storage area. Without AC or a swamp cooler, we suffer here with the heat, especially in a brick house that seems to radiate the heat inward, even as it cools off outside. I have noticed that I don’t get dizzy and a headache, the shakes and nausea that I get from the heat, remember that Colorado is Semi-aired in climate and we are even more susceptible, than most to the heat and effects of dehydration.

I also gave some to my husband pre-heart surgery, feeling it would help him out as he went for a day without eating and a time without some of his medications. He liked the taste of it too and we don’t know if it helped him or not, but I wanted to make sure he had something good in him, since he couldn’t eat.

All in all, the claims that they make about Essentia Water, I don’t know about most of them, but I do know that it helped very well with the days of heat well into the 90’s (almost 100 degrees, I think that one day that I drank it, it was 102 however) and I didn’t have any of the side effects of dehydration. I hope to be able to stock up on this water for those extra hot days.

Speaking of stocking up, Essentia Water can be bought at (below is a list from their fact sheet):

Available nationwide, Essentia’s network of retailers includes leading natural foods stores such as Whole Foods, Sprouts, and Vitamin Cottage. Mariah’s Brief Absence – Slow Return to the Blog

Hi all, sorry about my brief absence here, I am sure you’ll understand the reasoning behind it.

News Boy with animated words "EXTRA"

Some Of My Hubbies Health Issues Revealed:

My husband and I thought he had a heart attack back in, about, 2006… our Dr at the time checked him, called an ambulance and had him stay in the hospital overnight. The next morning before I took him home, they had him do a stress test (prior to his injuring his back) on a treadmill and the test was finished and they acted like it was nothing, sending him home with medicine for heartburn! Yup, true deal and one of the things that had us leave Kaiser Permanente as it was be beginning of our wondering if they were treating us right.

Sick Teddy Bear Bandaid Taking TempuratureRecently our new Dr, outside of Kaiser, took a very close look at my husbands health history and placed him on aspirin and some medications for his heart health and stated straight out that he had a heart attack back then.

Possible Further Heart Problems Discovered

My husband went in for some epidural shots in his lower back (he is disabled now in Chronic Pain) and the Doctor, that was to do the procedure noticed not only a fast heartbeat but his heart had skipped (what looked like half on the paper read out that I looked at with the Doctor) beats. The Doctor explained to us that we needed to see a Cardiologist and he refused to give him the epidural shots. The Doctor stated that if he got to close to a nerve he was afraid my husband would have a heart attack during the procedure.

Months Of Testing from March Onward

The final test was the clincher… one of the many tests that our Primary Physician ordered showed a problem. The test was a the Chemical Stress Test… it was time to finally see the Cardiologist, who’s office we visited for the Chemical Stress Test (this was 2 weeks ago).

The visit to the Cardiologist:

He revealed that my husband had PVC’s all over the place and it was either time for dangerous medications or time for surgery, angioplasty and a couple of stints, “ASAP.” And to look at the tip of the heart that appears to be dead. OMG Panic Mode here and Major stress hit us at home.

Close up of Mariah hubby after heart surgery

The Surgery For Hubbies Heart

Last week, on Thursday, we had my husband’s surgery and they explored his heart as they were at it. As my husband was going through all the Surgery Preps, they let him know that he not only had a heart attack, back when we were with Kaiser, but he had another one during the stress test. The surgery went well, however they found not the 2 arteries that were 90% blocked but a 3rd as well… so it wasn’t just one or two stints but 4. A nurse at the hospital indicated that we will know if he needs bypass surgery in a while, but we wait until after he looks healed for now and I am sure further tests will be involved.

hubby after heart surgery
Yes that Tattooed Man is my dear hubby. Here he is after surgery, He cannot remember this picture or the other one where he modeled for it. Poor baby was talkative but sooooo out of it. My job, keep him still, his back hurt laying still for so long and he kept trying to lift his head, a no no after his type of surgery.

The rest is history, my husband is home safe and sound, he refused to stay in the hospital since our Medicare Advantage through AARP would charge us a lot more than we could afford on $1500 a month that we live on (since we are both on Social Security Disability). My husband is on a lot of restrictions right now as the stints heal into his arteries of his heart, no stress, no exerting himself etc. The time period is up for the lowest amount of lifting, which was no more than 10 pounds, but still he has to be careful.

Stress and The Solution, A Get Away

Squirrels one massaging the other, in an animated picture
Hey These two know how to achieve some relaxation! It’s time for hubby and I to De-stress too.

As I am sure you can imagine, at this time, my life is still in crazy mode here. We did, under my husband’s insistence, go fishing on Thursday. He insisted that I was stressing far to much and he knew that my health can be at serious risk with stress and of course my stressing made him stress which is a big no-no.

the 5 fish we caught, my 2 Rainbow Fish, my 2 Brown Trout and My Husband's small Rainbow. Check out what we caught, my husband caught one small Rainbow Trout and I caught two nice sized fat Rainbows and 2 German Brown Trouts. One was 16 inches large, we measured it for the picture, however I was holding the tape measure with the hand I have to snap photos with and the tape measure slipped (as did my camera when I tried to get the whole fish in the picture).

My 16 inch German Brown Trout and it being measured at 16 inches.
Not a fish tale/tail (lol) my husband holding my big catch of the day. He kept saying you have “Bragging Rights” and we had to get a tape measure. It measured 16 inches, however at this angle it looks like 15 1/2 because of my moving the tape measure, the angle and we missed getting the whole fish in the picture as I couldn’t get far enough away. lol Believe it or not, It was a great catch and wonderful flavor for our healthy, heart smart meal. 🙂

We had a wonderful time fishing up at George Town Lake here in Colorado, here are the Road trip pictures and the picture of the scenery that I took while I was fishing. 🙂

Yay, here we are pulling up to the lake! Nice George Town Lake isn’t too far from home in Westminster, Colorado.
George Town Lake, Colorado Scenery As seen by Mariah of HonestlyMariah.com
As I sat down to fish, I first found I had a welcoming by some mean Red Ants. I did move my chair a little further over and after tucking my pants into my socks (with my big floppy hat tied on because of the wind, I sure looked like a Dork!) I looked up and saw this scenery. WOW! Much needed chance to relax and not worry about a thing was finally underway! What a Day!

I am trying to come back, although my life is still crazy hectic,  my reviews will possibly be a bit brief for me (maybe a welcome site for some of my readers, since I do tend to be wordy), but I will try to do them justice.

Thank you for your patience as I try the balancing act of health issues, family and the blog.

Love and hugs
