Tis the Season for Pine Bros. Throat Drops – Review

Pine Bros Logo

Yes friends, it’s the time of the year again where we experience sore throat colds coughs and so it’s the time of year to be thinking about your throat.

I received an invitation from Pine Brothers to try their Softish Throat Drops. As soon as I saw the drops I instantly recognize them as something from the past. I didn’t recognize the packaging however, so I think it was long ago that I had these, probably given them by my mother or a friend. I suppose that part of their name came from the fact that these are not quite chewing throat drops, but they are softish in texture but not a gummy texture and possibly because the way they soften the sore throat too.

Pine Bros Softish Throat Drops in Packages & Pucks, flavors in picture wild cherry and Natural Honey

For my review, I received 2 flavors of these throat drops, Natural Honey and Wild Cherry Flavored. I love both of them and hope that I can find some of them that are in limited quantities this Holiday Season, what flavor would that be you ask? Why Licorice of course!  Yum, I bet those will be the ones to gather up all you can and hoard.

Time for a word from the CEO of Pine Brothers

It’s hard to believe that this was first introduced 140 years ago, the product seems so modern in it’s ingredients, and all natural product… nice! Below is a part of what I read on their website:

“Mr. Pine, a former German confectionery maker, determined that by combining the soothing natural qualities of glycerin with the healing properties of gum acacia, he could sooth and mitigate the mild discomfort of a sore throat. Add in some natural flavoring and a sweetener and voila, Pine Brothers Softish Throat Drops were born…”

After reading this little snippet (above) I realized I had done some reading a while back on some homeopathic sites about gum acacia (AKA: Gum Arabic) so I will share with you what I gleaned from the sites. Gum Acacia had been used in Ancient Egypt as a lozenge to relieve pain and . And has been shown to have healing properties and has been used throughout the ages, even so safe and beneficial that they say in times of famine people have lived off from just gum acacia and water.

picture of Pine Brothers throat drops from their website

I also have to make note of why else to use throat drops like these, if you have dry mouth… many medicines, Lupus SLE and Sjögren’s syndrome (I have experienced all of these), to name a few, are causes of dry mouth. In my humble opinion these drops are your best bet in helping you out with dry mouth and they don’t taste nasty like the toothpaste, mouthwash and mouth-moisturizer gels out there. And as a former Cosmetologist, I know that Glycerin is a natural Humectant, attracting and retaining moisture to and in the skin, so why not the mouth too?

Here is why I feel that they would be your best bet to fight dry mouth, the Softish Throat Drops not only taste great, they are not too sweet, the Gum Acacia (the homeopathic sites say) helps keep you from building up plaque and keep down the bacteria in the mouth that can lead to periodontal problems. And if you’ve had bad dry mouth before and seen a dentist, like I had while experiencing it badly, they will tell you that dry mouth can lead to terrible problems with your teeth and gums, like gingivitis and periodontal disease. So if you suffer from dry mouth like I do, now you know my new weapon! 🙂

Pine Bros Natural Honey Softish Throat Drops

I will not bore you with too much information on Pine Bros Softish Throat Drops, since not too long ago Joan wrote all about it’s history and it can be viewed in her review or on the Pine Bro website.

Pine Bros Wild Cherry Flavor Softish Throat Drops

I have to say a big thank you to Pine Bros and Joan for asking them to send some my way, after I had read Joan’s review and talked to her on the phone I had told Joan that I wished I had a CVS Pharmacy near me so that I could try them out for myself and see if I too remembered them. Little did I know how very many other places carry the Pine Bros Throat Drops… I saw on their site that there are several places near me and I will be there soon to look for my licorice, if you live in Colorado and your store is out of the Licorice you can blame me for clearing out there shelves, if these taste anything like the 2 I’ve tried you don’t have any hope of finding some for yourself!

Thank you Pine Bros and Joan for recommending me for a review of their product… I am in LOVE and no other lozenge or throat drop shall pass these lips… well maybe if I was stranded on a desert island and all I had was something else, but how would that happen since I will be carrying only these?

Dragon NaturallySpeaking gives me a Helping Hand – Review

Dragon Naturally Speaking Logo

Before I get going on this post, I want to let you know that as I was finishing up my post, I saw something on Dragon NaturallySpeaking Facebook page & I felt that I just had to share this with you: TODAY ONLY (11/29/12) Dragon Home Home Edition is on Sale for today only at 50% off!  here is the link and while you are thinking of getting this, consider that it comes now with a free gift of Family Tree Maker Genealogy Software and a free headset! Look for the “Home Holiday Bundle” on their website. :)The sale is not on the version I am working with, but it hits all the basics…the sale is on the Home Edition. I am using the Premium Edition which adds on Social Media Features and more.

Have you heard of Dragon NaturallySpeaking, the software that has voice recognition and will type for you? Let me tell you some about my history with it as well as my newest version that I have received for a review.

Hi folks, back in the 90’s (about 1996) I was given a gift by 2 online friends that I love to chat with online. My friends Keith and Sharron sent me Dragon NaturallySpeaking (version 2 I believe) when the problems with my Neck (resulting in terrible pain in my shoulders, arms and hands as well as my neck) got best of me. I began spending a lot less time online chatting with my friends as a result. Since Sharron’s son Michael has a terrible disability himself, Keith and Sharron knew of a great solution for me, they knew that my disability had already cut into my social life with the chronic pain and not everyone understanding it so well (people can start to disappear in your life as a result of a disability and worse yet having several invisible illnesses didn’t make it easier for people to understand)… my online friends sent me a wonderful gift in the mail one day and it was Dragon NaturallySpeaking.

When I received Dragon NatuallySpeaking, back then, it was a new product and speech to text was a new technology, but I have to say it was still a big help as I continuously trained the program. I loved the program so much and it was such a huge help. Since getting back to being online more and more once again, I really have missed my Dragon and needless to say my injury to my neck that causes the nerve pain going down my shoulders, arms and hands hasn’t gotten better, nor has the chronic pain gotten any better over the years, as a matter of fact it’s gotten worse. I admit it, it has been difficult to work on the blog and think through my reviews and giveaways as my dyslexia also gets harder to control when my pain level is up.

Nuance LogoI contacted Nuance the makers of Dragon NaturallySpeaking and asked them if they would be interested in a review from me, since I had previously used their product when it had first come out. I was tickled pink when they wrote back and said that they wanted to send me a demo copy! Yay Nuance you are truly my hero’s, thank you thank you! 🙂

You have choices with Dragon Naturally Speaking, from the basic Home Edition, Premium Edition and Dragon Dictate for Mac. I will be talking about the Premium Edition in my review.

I received my Dragon shipped to my house in great condition, I received version 12 Premium Edition of dragon, it now even includes a headset complete with your microphone. Then I noticed that it now has a tutorial, I don’t recall Dragon having that in the past. but lets face it it’s been years since I last had Dragon.

The install was easy, I went with the full install, I just didn’t feel like messing with the program typical settings by using the advanced settings for it to adjust it to my liking, as I usually do with programs. Hey and anyway I can tell you this way about what the full install works like, perhaps later I will adjust what programs I have installed.

When you finished installing, expect to register, validate your program and account with Nuance. Then it will take some time, but you have all the help you could want to create your Profile for Dragon. The software will check out your audio devices, microphone etc…

Did you know that you can not only use your microphone to speak to Dragon, but you can also use an external recording device send the recording to your computer and use that to have Dragon Transcribe for you? Well, it’s not recommended in the beginning… remember Dragon does need you to use it via the microphone as you and Dragon both learn together… but wow, how cool is that?

Later on you will begin Training your Dragon (hmmm sounds rather like a movie I once saw… lol … yes some of us old people that are young at heart still like children’s movies!). In this step you can pick one of the texts to read, I decided to start off with the top most one, the easiest and I went back to this later, training it with more. Oh and I was tempted to do the teenage reading on the very bottom it was a fantasy text… that is more like me. lol I will get to that one eventually.

The program then uses your documents and emails to check for your usual writing style and add names from contacts too! I changed some of my documents on my computer to txt files for Dragon to read since I am using Open office and Thunderbird (open source free programs) currently there are some limitations on what Dragon will use for your writing style, but it does recognize these programs when you go to dictate to them which was a wonderful surprise. 🙂

Oh and speaking of surprises… I forgot to tell you something… and I bet you were wondering about this as you’ve been reading my review.  I am currently using Dragon to post this review and I have to say it’s really nice that it has tools for use with the most popular browsers out there… in Firefox (the browser that I use) a nice little area with common commands comes up, like a cheat sheet. A little dictation box comes up for use and then when you are done (I do this in increments as a habit … do you know SASO? (SASO means Save And Save Often and is a great tip for when you are using a new program or you worry about losing your work).

The biggest problem with using Dragon? Is ME! I am not used to dictation yet, so I admit as I learn to think in this new way, I am sometimes going in and correcting a lot by voice. I do have faith that this old dog here (me) can indeed learn new tricks.. after all my 11 year old fur kid (Mr. Peanut my dachshund) can, so why can’t I? Since you can correct via voice it does save on the arms and hands, however I get frustrated with myself and cheat using my keyboard and mouse instead at times… yes you can do that too. But I will tell you the more you use the voice dictation the easier it gets and you are cheating when you do this by hand and as the saying goes for test cheaters, the only one you are cheating is yourself… and this is so very true when you are trying to learn Dragon.

I love how well Dragon recognizes my voice, how easy it is to work with… I tell you if you tried it years ago at the birth of voice recognition in the 90’s you will be so surprised at the wonderful advancements made in the program. Dragon continues to grow and develop into a very user friendly program and I was so very surprised at the advances Nuance made in the development of the program, the product was perfect on first use right out of the box… simply amazing!

I love the way this program has helped me I hurt myself years and years ago and I am currently in a chronic flare that has been going on for a month, I made the pain in my neck, shoulders arms and hands worse by trying to paint walls for a review recently, and then as it was starting to settle down I over did it with my preparations for a lovely Thanksgiving Dinner with my parents visiting Rick and I. I should know better but I am a Taurus and I get stubborn when I get my mind set on something. What Dragon is allowing me to do today? I am sitting here with a sling on my one arm and ice on my shoulders right now… I flared up the other shoulder by over compensating for the one in pain. Anyway I can sit back, relax, let myself heal some and still get my work done!

OH yes and guess what? 50% off Home Edition with Gifts Today only 11/29/12 (I am so glad I spotted this on their facebook page today so I could share it with you), $49.99 for Dragon, what a bargain especially since it also comes with special gifts of the Family Tree Maker Geneology Software and a microphone headset! You can find the link at the top of this post. So if you have wanted one for yourself or know someone that would/could use this now is the time to order. I have to wait for my husband to get home and see if he wants a copy for his computer since he’s now blogging too and has been watching me use mine and sounded tempted to get one of his very own.

Tommie Copper Review & Giveaway

Edit 7/24/14:  Hi There, I have a review and Giveaway of a $50 Tommie Copper Gift Certificate… good through: Aug. 11, 2014! You can find this Review and Giveaway here:

Tommy Copper Logo

I feel so lucky to have had the opportunity work on review of Tommie Copper Compression Wear.  I picked the compression shirt to help support my shoulders, I’ve been having a serious flare with the bursitis with the additional pain of Fibromyalgia in my shoulder.

I had noticed Tommie Copper on the Television with their Commercial with Montel Williams as their spokes person, with his MS it states that really has helped him with his pain. Well, I admit it, I thought the products sounded too good to be true. Yet I was intrigued and so happy when I along with my friend at Joan (who I worked with on my old blog Joan and Mariah’s Reviews) were invited to try out the Tommie Copper compression T-shirt in June 2011. Joan was fortunate enough to try many of their products and I received a choice of one product to try. Joan mentioned to the representative that I too have Chronic Pain issues, and so they were generous enough to throw in one shipment of a product for me to try too. I was tickled pink at the generosity at Tommie Copper for letting me participate in the review that was initially for Joan alone.

Tommie Copper was the brain child of a guy named Tommie Kallish, who had developed arthritis and tried many different kinds of support available. He did get some relief, however he did discover that these supports where not only thick but very uncomfortable to wear. So he tried many types of fabrics for support and through time he discovered the one that works best for him and that fabric is now being used in Tommie Copper Compression Wear.

Now we know where the Tommie part of the Company name came from, now how about the word Copper in the name? There is Copper in the compression/support wear. You many notice the Cu29 on their logo (the Cu is the elemental number of Copper and the atomic number for Copper is 29). I know from the past, when we tried copper bracelets at home for hubby and me, that copper is supposed to be a healing metal and at Tommie Copper they figured out an ingenious way of placing Copper in their products weave.

Sizing and Ordering my Product for the Review:

The person I wrote to about the Tommie Copper, helped me find the right size, I am large chested with small waist, this makes me person that is hard to fit, she took me down a size in the compression shirt for my waist and it works perfectly.

women's compression wear shirt

Receiving my Tommie Copper:

I received a nice silver toned bag with my Tommie Copper Top in it… I was amazed at how lightweight the mailing bag was.

Wearing the Compression Shirt:

I feel a nice compression with this shirt, I am currently wearing it under my sundress as I type, and it’s helping with my bad shoulder problem. I have a reoccurring case of bursitis in my shoulder, and, of course I recently placed it in a serious flare (be it my Fibromyalgia or my Bursitis) and I have had nothing but problems as I wait for an appointment with my Rheumatologist for steroid shot in my shoulder. This shirt has helped out my shoulder so much that I don’t think I will need the shot after all! 🙂 And I can’t forget to tell you that I have noticed that it does also help with some of the pain in my lower back and behind my shoulder blades.

Time for a little female secret while wearing this shirt, shhhhh…

Gals, does your chest get uncomfortable when it is close to that time of the month? Well with this shirt, it has a lovely V neck, and is stretchy enough that you can just take that neckline and move it over your chest and under your bra, so that you’re not wearing it over your chest at all. It didn’t stretch mine out and made it more comfortable for me during that “just before” time of the month. 🙂 Hey and it helps lift those “girls” up just a little too, hey I may be big chested but it does make you look slimmer that way too. Lol

Washing Tommie Copper:

Try to remember not use your fabric softener when washing your Tommie Copper items as the softening, in the fabric softeners, does not allow the Copper to properly work with your body, it sort of muffles the results you’d get. I one day washed mine in with other clothing and didn’t think about it, the compression still helped some but not as much as when I remembered not to use the fabric softener with it. Now I wash it, make a mental note to myself not to use fabric softener, and I remove the items from the washing machine and air dry them (using drier sheets for the remaining laundry in the dryer).

In conclusion:

I love my shirt, it’s a soft fabric in a v-neck and lightweight enough that it isn’t hard to wear in the high temps outside today, note with the new house I don’t have AC so it’s very hot as we break records today, this holds in a little bit of the body heat, but that is a healing factor that I learned about while I was a dancer. And as I’ve done research on help for my Fibromyalgia, Lupus SLE I’ve read many reports on copper and the healing properties, as well as compression etc… many compression wear was too constraining to wear for any period of time, not with this shirt, I love the comfort, soft compression and not irritating fabric. The Tommie Copper Compression Shirt seems to breath with me, and let my skin still breath. And I love the sylish V-neck! I also love the non-slip band around the top so it doesn’t roll down and drive me nuts.  A lot of thought went into these compression devices!

Added Note 2012: A year after writing this review on the old blog, I received their new compression Tights for women and reviewed them, you can see the review here.

Susan Howard Designs – Comfort Wear Necklaces Review & Giveaway

I would like to introduce you to Susan Howard Designs, she has designed a beautiful line of jewelry that she calls her Comfort Wear and when you read the statements on the jewelry you will know just why the name is perfectly suited. This woman has been truly touched by the hand of God in her life and her calling to share her creations with us.
Closeup of the Overcoming Difficulties Dear Lord you have seen my anger and my tears you know my heartach and my fears I will trust in you forever more grant me eagle wings so I may soar.
Overcoming Difficulties the back, a beautiful prayer.

I was fortunate enough to have been asked by Susan to receive a piece of her jewelry to review as my partner Joan had suggested it. I feel so fortunate to have this beautiful piece of jewelry and mine is the comfort necklace dedicated to “Overcoming difficulties”… as some of you know I suffer from Chronic Pain from Fibromyalgia, Lupus SLE and herniated discs in my neck and in my lower back. As a result of this, though I try to remain positive and hand my pain up to God, it does get very frustrating and it’s impossible to know from one day to the next what just how bad my pain level will be.

The statement on the back of the necklace spoke to me (see the pictures) and so when my blog partner, Joan came to me and let me know that Susan and her would love to have me review one of Susan’s faith inspired, Sterling Silver Necklaces, I knew exactly which necklace would help. The necklace helps to remind me that no matter how alone I feel God is always with me and knows my suffering and frustrations.

The necklace arrived in a beautiful box… and as I opened the box I realized that not one picture would EVER do these beautiful works of art justice! Maybe a part of that for me is also the sentimental value that such a remarkable gift was made with such thought and giving to me knowing what I go through each and every day for over 25 years of my life…. but to me it’s one of the most beautiful pieces of jewelry that a person could ever own. A reminder of the Lord above and for the memorial comfort jewelry a reminder of those we’ve loved and have passed on. A prayer of sorts for them and comfort for us.

These would make perfect gifts for yourself and loved ones who have lost someone and is having a rough time dealing with their lose. Remember this shop too for friends and family that are experiencing difficulties in their lives, whether is be sent to them with a sympathy card as gifts for family planning a funeral or any of life’s difficulties.
