Big Ouchies for Men Skinny Dipping in the News

Hi folks, have you been skinny dipping lately? Me? Well I always wanted to, but wouldn’t dare, the couple of times I was invited. lol Okay, seriously now, it’s been a while since I posted anything from the News other than recalls related to my readers health. This time I am posting about another health risk, okay death warning.

News Boy with animated words "EXTRA"My husband told me about this story this morning and he posted about it on his blog (the link to his post is near the bottom on this post). This news story made me cringe and shocked me… and the story was very upsetting to my husband imagining this terrifying death to skinny dipping men.

Pacu fish TeethThere is a fish in the news that was native to South America, it’s called the Pacu Fish. These fish are related to Piranha (but much larger than the Piranha growing up to 55 lbs). The Pacu likes to eat coconuts that falls from the trees. Well, it’s been found in the US now, as people put their “pet” fish, for whatever reason into our lakes. Well, these teeth on the fish look human and they have killed some men who skinny dip!

Well, I guess the Coconuts and ummm for the lack of a better word (and very appropriate for this post) ummm… they look at “nuts” and mistaken them for their favorite eats! The men attacked by these fish have bled to death. Can you imagine? YIKES!

mens chainmail thongHere is the thoughts and perspectives on this from “The Old Fat Man“, my husband, and I thought you may enjoy reading his post. 🙂 The Old Fat Man, recommends chain-mail thongs, and I think that, if you must swim naked men, I’d recommend a good shave… perhaps would help. I found the picture below while looking for 2 coconuts side by side for this post and I started ROFL, so I had to include it here (below).

TheraPearl Neck Wrap – Review

TheraPearl Logo from Package
I was offered a chance to review the TheraPearl Neck Wrap… a very unique product, that got it’s name from the innovative “pearls” of liquid in these wraps. I was anxious to give this a try and see what it could do for me. The products by TheraPearl are Hot & Cold Therapys and was curious as to how it can manage to go from Freezer to the Microwave to achieve therapy for my aches and pains.

TheraPearl Close up of the pearls in circleAs many of you know I suffer from a multitude of illnesses that cause chronic pain and I am always trying to find something new and innovative to relieve some of the pain. With Fibromyalgia and Lupus SLE (to tell you the truth they are thinking about it actually being Connective Tissue Disease, another form of Autoimmune Disease very close to Lupus SLE) and degenerative Disc Disease. I try not to take my pain meds too often on most days, leaving some extra for those horribly unbearable days. And as such I need something, anything to help relieve the pain, even on the pain meds I need something more, as my body adjusts to the dosages after a while and they won’t work too well.

I thought that this review maybe very helpful to many of my readers here, as I am aware of the Chronic Pain issues that it seems a lot of you regulars go through out there. And I know how everyone has those times in which they need some help with pain, be is sprains, pains, keeping tension in your neck etc. I hope sincerely that this review will help you out and give you a new idea of a product that I tried and worked for me. 🙂 And hey, as we grow older, it seems many of us experience more aches and pains with our bodies, like arthritis and past injuries.

TheraPearl Neck Wrap Box FrontNow Comes in TheraPearl, being that it’s hot and cold therapy it’s perfect, because my different conditions require different treatment, from cold therapy when the bursitis acts up, to heat and moist heat therapy for my degenerative disc disease. What do I do with TheraPearl for the moist heat, is wrap it in a thin damp towel, I personally use my old fashioned Flour Bag type of dish towels for this, this way it doesn’t over saturate my clothing with the moisture.

I had started with using ice bags for the bursitis, and electric heating pad for my neck therapy, however this limits movement some and the heating pad doesn’t conform to the neck and shoulders well. From there I went to home crafted pillows made with millet in them for relief of my pain, but I admit that they flop, are clumsy, and that weight doesn’t help with the pain much, infact, at times the weight can increase the pain level.

And for cold therapy I’ve tried Ice bags, the good old fashioned round ones, but for that I had to ice available all the time and in-between time I had to let the inside of the bag dry thoroughly to keep the bag in good condition. I later switched to the bag of peas, and well, that needs support so stay put which can hinder movement.

TheraPearl Box and Wrap side by sideI have found that using the TheraPearl has freed me up more, so I can move around and not feel constricted to sitting back to support it or worse yet tied to the cord of the moist heating pad and the weight is ideal for painful shoulders and neck.

The TheraPearl Neck Wrap is so thin that I can tuck it in my shirt and answer the door, I really don’t like answering the door to a stranger that when I look vulnerable (perhaps it’s just me or that I’ve just turned 50, but I have heard horror stories) and with the ability to have relief, answer the door and hide the therapy under my shirt actually makes me feel more secure. Okay, silly perhaps, but now a days can we be too careful?

The only down sides to the neck wrap that I found, was that some of my cervical degenerative discs are up higher on the neck and they require moist heat, the wrap, while heated in the microwave, doesn’t conform easily to the upper neck (base of scull) without my tying a scarf to hold it up there. However when I try it from the freezer (2 hours in the freezer gives you 20 minutes of relief) I find it conforms more easily and only a little support is needed for higher up on the neck. And the plastic smell, is more prominent when you microwave it, but it’s a fair trade for the ease of use, for mobility and being able to hide this handy therapeutic wrap.

The upside, it does what it advertises, it gives relief that lasts the perfect therapeutic amount of time (always 20 minutes, as per both the Doctors and Physical Therapists), it does seem to cool gradually as would any microwaveable products for pain therapy. You don’t have a lot of weight added to your neck and shoulders to support and it’s thin enough to hide under your clothing. And the instructions for use are plainly labeled on the TheraPearl, which comes in handy.

All in all, I’d say this is very innovative and great replacement for ice bags, frozen vegetables and for Millet filled microwaveable heat wraps or the old heating pad. I highly recommend this product and hope to one day try their product for lower back pain and knee pain too.

TheraPearl being used on DexterOh yes, and I saw one of the TheraPearls Packs being used on Dexter (yes I am a fan) during last weeks Episode, yes I caught it and I wondered. Then I verified it on TheraPearl’s Facebook Page… Pretty Cool! Even a TV Series supplied an actor with a great product for his “injuries” in that Episode! lol

Pork Chomps Healthier Than Rawhides – Review & Giveaway

Hi there friends, it’s the Dog Days of Summer and a great time to review more items for the dogs in our lives. I was fortunate enough to be contacted by a Representative of Pork Chomps by Scott Pet for some treats for our Canine Fur Kids. Needless to say my dogs really LOVE reviewing products for the blog and they have eagerly munched away joyfully on their treats.

Pork Chomps Logo: Premium Pork ChompsThese treats are very unusual, they act like the rawhides that can keep our dogs busy chewing away, however they are made of expanded baked Pork Skin. These are a healthy alternative to rawhide.

As usual I did my research on the new treats, reading through the documents that I was sent, as well as their Pork Chomps Website. I learned about the great health benefits for our dogs, with these treats.

From the Pork Chomps Website:

Showing the large variety of products in the Pork Chomps line

Pork Chomps are more digestible than rawhide because they are made from skin not hide. Rawhide was just an inexpensive byproduct of the cattle industry, and virtually has no flavor on its own. That is why most rawhide is basted, stuffed or sugarcoated, in order to interest pets. Pork Chomps are also better than rawhide chews for dogs because of Scott Pet’s proprietary, patented expanding process wherein 70% of the pork’s fat is removed, creating a more natural dog chew that is a cleaner product with reduced grease and odor.

Here are a few paragraphs about these dog treats in on of the documents that I received, that I thought were of most interest:

Pet parents have been searching for a rawhide-alternative chew that they can feel safe giving to their pets,” said Scott Pet President and C.E.O Mike Bassett. “So, we commissioned a first-of-its-kind study last year to prove that expanded, baked pork skin chews are more digestible than rawhide.”

Bassett said the study (located at http://www.journalofanimalscience.org/content/90/12/4355), conducted by the University of Illinois Department of Animal Sciences and Department of Animal Sciences at Purdue University, found that Pork Chomps were 99.9% digestible compared to rawhide chews, which were only 50-85% digestible. Digestibility is imperative since dogs often times swallow large chunks of chews, which can lead to intestinal blockages if it isn’t completely digested.

In addition, the study showed that dogs that had eaten Pork Chomps products had reduced cholesterol and triglyceride levels – a health benefit that rawhide chews can’t provide, Bassett said.

Pork Chomps products are also better than rawhide chews because of Scott Pets’ proprietary, patented expanding process wherein 70% of the pork’s fat is removed, creating a cleaner, easier to digest product that has longer shelf life. The process also removes unsightly color from the pork skin while reducing odor and grease

I couldn’t wait for the treats to arrive, at last something that perhaps my dogs could really chew on, like a rawhide and wouldn’t make my dogs sick with diarrhea? Well we will see.

Pork Chomps Baked Pork Knotz 1I received the box of Pork Chews and when I opened them I admit that I was petrified at first, wondering what I was thinking when I said okay to them, as the chews look almost identical to rawhides. I’ve said it before and I will say it again, my dogs have sensitive tummies and they have problems with some foods, well this extends to raw hide chews too. They have a rough time (or should I say “ruff time” lol) with their digestion when it comes to rawhide chews, as a result they get a bad case of diarrhea. So we had to take the dogs off rawhides all together.

The box that I received had a great variety of Pork Chomps for my dogs to try out and I must say that, although my dogs are considered Medium size dogs, a majority of the chews are more than ample in size for them… I should have requested the small dog size for them instead. But they receive more carrots for little snacks during the day as a result, which is also very good for them. Lol

Pork Chomps Baked Pork Knotz test with Mr PeanutPork Chomps Baked Pork Knotz test with Mr Peanut

One day I realized that I could feed my dogs both a different treat so I fed Mr. Peanut (he’s a avid chewer and chews away on any large treat very fast) the Pork Chomp Knotz, which are pretty big. And I gave Tiny Dog the same, and though this was the second time he had this treat, Tiny Dog decided to guard it while on my lap after briefly nibbling at it. I thought I was being smart when I suddenly thought about Tiny Dog and the fact that his more of a nipper, trying to chew with his front teeth mostly and that his mouth was not nearly as large as his big brother, Mr. Peanut. So what did I do? I took the bone away and fed him one of the stick like ones Pork Chomps Baked Twistz and he went to town on it. Suddenly, there was a fight and Mr. Peanut won the prize he wanted the Twistz. Silly me, I didn’t think about the different flavor with the Twistz as it had sweet potato in it. Mr Peanut guarded his own while chomping at Tiny Dog’s treat, so we had to take both treats away. Mommy (me) learned her lesson on that day, from now on they get the same treat.

When I purchase more, I aim now for the smaller treats to accommodate the smaller mouth on Tiny Dog, since he will use his back teeth some, but he mostly nibbles and nips to the treats. If I had just the one dog, Mr. Peanut,  I would just go with the larger sized Pork Chomps as they are just perfect for him.

Pork Chomps sweet potato wrapped Tiny dog begging and Mr Peanut looking onI also tested the Pork Chomps and versus the rawhide with Mr. Peanut, since he is my big chewer. Mr Peanut, with the two at his side chose the Pork Chomps to work on. Nice, I can see why they say that it is preferred over rawhide’s 9 to 1, my older dog really prefers the Pork Chomp.

I found a huge list of retailers, that sell Pork Chomps, on their website

In their list they include Walgreens, PetSmart & Big Lots all of which aren’t too far away for me. This is a big plus being able to shop near me for the Pork Chomps and my Walgreens is really close, and where I buy mine currently. Yes I have bought these recently and I plan to check out the prices at Big Lots to see if I save even more.

They also have a promotion on right now in their online store for Free Shipping in the month of August! Yay! I won’t have to travel at all, and I can have them delivered to my door.

Pork Chomps sweet potato wrapped Tiny dog begging and Mr Peanut looking onIn Conclusion:

I have to say that this is a fantastic alternative to the raw hides! And I am aware that giving them something to chew on is good for their dental health and takes care of their instincts to chew as well, so it’s wonderful that the dogs have something good to chew on again. This not only is good for them but for me too as it keeps them busy and out of my hair for a time. And I don’t have to deal with any problems with their digestion and intensity of the dogs, looking for constant attention, when their belly’s were upset from rawhides.

And as far as my dogs are concerned, these Pork Chomps are “The Bomb!”
