Switching to Save with Directv – Save $100

Here is an offer for those Switching to Save with Directv, to save $100 on Directv (AKA: Direct TV) has been extended (this offer is only for new subscribers, as they sign up using account numbers of  us folks who are already subscribers to Directv). This offer has been extended!

Directv picture of the satelite dish

We just noticed, on this months bill, that we have started saving $10 per month for 10 months, as of this month because someone online just switched to Directv with our coupon code (our account number), however it’s is even easier online to switch now using the persons personal link… ours will be included at the end of this post.

Everyone who is with Directv is allowed to have 1o friends saving $10/per month with them (that is up to $100 per month in savings). We have 9 friends remaining at this time that can use our account number (what I call our coupon code)… so we do have one friend who is saving $10 per month for 10 months along with us right now and now they too can start sharing their code for “friends.” 🙂 So the person who signed up using our code or personal link online can now find 10 friends and their savings will grow for 10 months!

This is what my husband says on his blog about the deal:

“Refer a friend to DTV and get 10 bucks off your bill”. Yup, that easy. If you want to try DTV and want to bag an extra 10 bucks off a month, here’s what you need. My name (Rick Lockwood), this number ( 41137732 ) and the number to call and order, which is 877-731-8456. By signing up as a referral from our account, you save 10 bucks a month… Hey, so do I lol… Lets share the savings!”

To take advantage of this offer, you need to give them the “friends” account number (ours is 41137732 )  or click on their personal link (there will be a link at the end of this post if you need one)  BEFORE you sign up to have your Direct TV Dish installed… this is the only way it works! A neighbor of ours had his installed and waited until then to try and use the code and that does not work. *sigh*

Comcast VS Directv:

directv with up arrow and higher bar vs xfinity by comcast which has a lower bar and a down arrow

The problems we had with Comcast

Before we switch to Directv, we were on Comcast and watched the bill go up and up (what I recall this was monthly). As we noticed that our so called High Definition/digital channels be reduced to only a few suddenly… the reduction of the HighDef on our channels happened several times close together and we finally just “had it” with our lack of good quality signals for our programs.

We started looking into the Comcast HighDef, we called Comcast and asked what was going on with our channels, needless to say we didn’t get an answer we were happy with. The explanation we received was that they were giving a few more channels in slightly better quality and needed to clear room on the signal for the non “highdef” channels that were going to be of better quality for our area then they were. Okay this was not good for us, we love our programs and prefer to get a good signal for the picture quality and sound on our system at home.

We had finally looked up information online and stumbled upon some information that explained the huge difference we saw when we watched a blu-ray & when we watch the  HighDef on Comcast, there was indeed a reason for it… we found out  so called HighDef channels are so heavily compressed that they were not actually coming through in the best quality. The difference between Comcast’s HD and Directv’s HD is that Comcast sends out the signal at 720-HD (DVD quality) and Directv sends it out at 1080-HD (Blu Ray quality). So we found out this is why were were noticing the difference with picture quality and sound with our surround sound system.

Our Decision to Switch to Directv

As a result of our searches online we found out that Directv was the way for us to go as their lineup of channels in the 1080 HD quality is significantly more than on Comcasts heavily compressed 720 HD quality. We also found that there were a lot more channels on Directv, some that I didn’t even know existed.

Things to Do & Consider Before Switching

refer a friend to direct tv and they save $100 with a Bill Credit and $100 of bill credits for your bill too

If you have a family member or friend that has Directv ask them for their account number with Directv so you can save $100 on the switch and they too can save. If you don’t know someone or they are afraid to share their account number, please feel free to use ours ( 41137732 ) for your phone call to Directv 877-731-8456 or very simply CLICK HERE, for you convenience this link includes all the information you need to received the discount and again you will save $10 per month for 10 months and so will we. If you do decide to go with Directv and use our info, feel free to leave me a comment so I can thank you! 🙂

For us, with our HD TV and Surround Sound System, we are very pleased with our Directv as the sound does come in with real surround sound and the picture is blu ray quality!

Disclaimer: The above is our personal experience and thoughts on Comcast vs Directv, I am not affiliated with Directv and I am sharing this 100% on my own without anything (but possibly a savings for my home on Directv) in exchange for this post. And as always this post is my honest opinion of the comparison of the two services.

Hawk Sighting – Wordless Wednesday

My Hawk Sighting Pictures:

This page will be slow to load as the pictures are huge, it’s the only way I could get close to your seeing the details, that I saw, on this Hawk.

Last but not least, look how beautiful this Hawk is! Sorry with this shot you can almost see his kill that he was eating on top of the light pole (I left out the pictures of him tearing it up etc…lol)

Okay, not totally wordless for this Hawk Sighting… lol. I hope to someday save up or have donated the lenses that I can use for my camera so the close ups of these sort of things will be better quality, I tried to improve them the best I can. I also created an Amazon HonestlyMariah .com blog wishlist, in case anyone wants to make a donation (hey it’s worth a try right?).

Writers of the Future – Review & Giveaway

In some of my free time, I’ve been taking the time to relax and enjoy a wonderful book lately “Writers of the Future Volume 29.”

My copy of L Ron Hubbard presents Writers of the Future volume 29
My copy of Writers of the Future Volume 29

I was very honored to have received an invitation to attend this years awards Ceremony, at the Ebell Theater in Los Angeles, to honor these talented Writers and Illustrators who won the Annual Contest for Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to attend with my financial constraints I couldn’t manage to swing flying out to witness this fantastic event in person. I really would have love to have seen it in person, I got goosebumps watching the Ceremony on YouTube! What an event… it felt just like I was told about the event & winning the contest, “It is like the “American Idol” of Science Fiction & Fantasy authors.”

I was lucky enough to view the video of the Ceremony online on YouTube, I won’t send you there, it was the full Awards Ceremony. The awards started just short of halfway through the video, but before that portion of the Ceremony, I loved the song in the opening. And I really enjoyed the story told by L. Ron Hubbard of his research for his stories. L. Ron Hubbard participated in so many adventures of his own so that he could really write about those things that he knew about. To find this video you can search youtube for Writers of the Future 2013 or Volume 29. 🙂

Below is Grand Winners portion of the Ceremony, just to keep this brief for you.

Although I wasn’t able to attend this wonderful Celebration and blog about my great adventure to a wonderful awards ceremony, I CAN blog about the book that was offered to me at the same time as the offer to attend the celebration. I can share with you a little idea of what you can find in this book, and give you an idea of the far away places that these Science Fiction & Fantasy writers took me to.

“Turn the page . . . open your eyes . . . and look into the future. . . .
They unleash the power of dreams and unlock the secrets of the universe. . . .
They bend time, twist perception, and put a new spin on the laws of physics….
They show us who we are, what we may become, and how far we can go.
They are the Writers and Illustrators of the Future. Experience their vision.” ~GalaxyPress.com

I have been taken to a world in which your death isn’t the end of you as you can be brought back with your memories backed up and hopefully they were backed up not to far from the time in which you had died. And I watched as the main character took on a very dangerous mission after waking up (after his death) in a body that was not his own.

I have traveled with some men as they fly through space checking out planets, as of yet unfamiliar to us, to see if intelligent life exists there. I’ve seen the inhabitants of the planets and in horror saw the damages they have caused to the travelers. I saw the damaged body parts get replaced, bit by bit and heard descriptions of other people that had been contaminated by the planets they have visited and had to be kept secluded from the rest of the planet for the rest of their lives.

These two stories above where just the first two of many wonderful stories that I have fully immersed myself in, yes so fully that you will note that I wrote the above like I was truly there with the characters or as if these stories were from a movie that I viewed. 🙂 There are many more to read from these Winners of the 29th Annual Achievement Awards for the Writers and Illustrators of the future… yes and I can’t forget the book contains the pictures (in black and white) by the winning Illustrators for the stories that they were made for.

writers of the future volume 29

The writers and illustrators are so wonderful that winners from the past awards have gone on to be very successful writers and illustrators… and some have recently won such awards as Hugo, Nebula and World Fantasy awards. I recall hearing (while I watched the Ceremony online) that one of the illustrators was doing story boards for Charlie Sheen’s New TV Series “Anger Management” and another illustrator had worked with the movie “Ice Age”… honestly so many accomplishments from so many of the past winners that I am surprised the lady announcing them had time to take a breath and that she didn’t need to take a break for a sip of water during the ceremony, if you watched the ceremony you will realize that she hardly took a break while speaking during this part. lol

I have enjoyed reading this book while filling my time waiting in the doctors office while either waiting for my husband to get out of his appointment or while I am waiting for my doctors appointment, and doing some late night unwinding, when it’s been an especially crazy or painful day and I cannot sleep. Having ADD I must have true quiet in my humble little home for my true enjoyment and immersing myself into a book and with this book I insisted upon it receiving my full attention… I cannot tell you how rare it is for me to find a book so fascinating that from story to story I find it keeping my undivided interest as I read from one story to another (each one story has a different author) to the next authors story and experience the authors world from their own imagination.

I highly recommend this book and I am pleased to announce that the book is available at these Stores below:

Question – Do Bad Things Come in Threes?

Honestly Mariah, a picture of me in May 2013
Yup, it’s me, I do need a haircut though! lol
Yes a former Cosmetologist that is waiting to save up for a haircut for the first time in a few years by someone else (other than me).

Is it me, or is the adage of “Bad Things Come in Threes” really true? What about you, do you believe this is the truth in life?

Every time something bad would happen, I used to say that I am “waiting for the other shoe to drop”. However since I married that handsome Marine husband of mine, I’ve learned about the adage “Bad Things Come in Threes,” that old saying does appear to be true (for us).  I no longer feel I can say that I am waiting for the other shoe to drop (although I think it, still)… unless someone happened to have 3 feet! lol

Since learning my husband’s adage and 21 years of marriage, all I can do is start counting when bad things happen. We’ve had such a week and a half here…

The beginning of Bad things Come in Threes

Nothing In Life Is Free

Yes another adage, Nothing In Life Is Free and so it is with the new vehicle we received.

This all started out with the new vehicle that my parents gave me, it wouldn’t pass emissions so we took it to the shop. Seems that some of the hoses were disconnected, one was completely plugged and then re-attached and the hose (or hoses) that were connected were connected in the wrong place (or places). This is why the emissions wouldn’t work, problems solved, right? NO! Now that things were doing what they should they noted that the gas was squirting out and onto hot surfaces… my parents were and we were just plain lucky that we didn’t have a fire or explosion! Now our bill is up to over $800 and with the two of us on Social Security Disability, we live paycheck to paycheck and so the credit card not only gets the charges for our medications but now we will be maxing it out with our newest expense and here we were planning on using the money left on the credit card to put towards a new hot water heater, it’s had a slow drip for a while and you have to run hot water (that is temped at best) for quite a while so the hot water heater will kick in & heat the water to a good temp for bathing, showers and washing dishes. Ah well such is life. We wait on the news of the vehicle still as they look into it further after this long weekend… we hope it’s not a cracked intake manifold or it will be much more… then we don’t know what we will do!

My Laptop “Bad Things Number Two”

Then of course I’ve been limping along with this laptop of mine and the problem with the noisy fan, that is going out (last years record heat in an old house without cooling of any kind wore it out I fear). I did put in an order for the part that I need and expect a call with the thumbs up on their getting it into the warehouse at Dell in a few days. At that time is when we pay for it and finally fix the laptop… I paced around the house as my husband took apart my laptop, keyboard and the hard drive were just some of the parts that had to be removed. I was so worried something would go wrong, but we found out which part we needed to replace on it and then he put it all back together and it’s working. Now we just wait for the part, so still limping along for the time being.

Along Comes Bad Thing Number Three

And of course, you all may have noticed the blog down for a while, then it returned only to disappear again. That was first some place attacking my site with too many requests to visit it or something… they said I was getting over 74,000 hits an hour! So it was a denial of service attack that has ended now.

Then the second time it went down we had a data base error of some sort and they tried to tell me at my host that I would have to start the Blog once again by scratch and rebuild everything from backup from almost a week ago! ARGH!!! GASP!!! Well, discussing this with my husband, during our multiple calls to our Hosting Site (were we pay for our blog to be on their servers), and we decided that it wouldn’t do any hard to go and reinstall WordPress on the blog and sure enough we fixed the problem. WHEW!!!!

Fixing The Bad Things

Well, one problem solved out of 3, and 2 are going to be fixed soon. Lucky for me my laptop part is only $4.99 through Dell and all the other merchants online that sold Dell parts have them for $24 to 40-some-odd dollars. So I am so glad that we found the problem and that I talked to the most helpful person in online chat through Dell’s Sales area… this is a really good thing! And though my laptop is pretty old, for a bloggers laptop which only lasts a lot of bloggers a year or two… we will be repairing the old thing and at a price that is very affordable for two people living on Social Security.

Time For Our Luck To Change

We have high hopes as a local man contacted us on the Old Jeep Cherokee and he has offered to buy us a new hot water heater, install it and take the old one away in exchange for the Jeep. Now he has yet to see the Jeep and approve the barter… but we will possibly be getting our Hot Water Heater taken care of after all! Oh how we hope and pray that the Jeep will be what he wants and needs when he sees it, hey it is a faithful vehicle after all.

This is just a sample of the same sort of luck we have at our home, and we’ve found that bad things come in threes for us.

Bad luck comes in threes, break a match
Something that I never heard of before, but the match breaking would be a kinder gentler sort of bad luck, so why not? lol

While searching the internet, I found what is possibly an old wives tale, a superstition of sorts and perhaps my superstitious husband will take note and do this… hey, it maybe worth a try. lol Break a match, or two after bad things happen, each match break counts as a bad thing. lol

What about you? Do you have a tale to tell?

I’d love to hear what you think, do you wait for the other shoe to drop or do you believe that bad things come in threes? Tell me about it… hey you know misery loves company! 😛

Love and hugs,

~Mariah

The Birth of a Legend – Enstrom’s Almond Toffee – Review & Giveaway

Enstrom’s A Story of SWEET Success

Once upon a time, not too very long ago, there was a man named Chester Enstrom (we will call him “Chet”). Chet was living in Grand Junction, Colorado with his family and in his spare time he made candies. Chet had a passion for making candy, and worked on perfecting his tasty treats as he gifted friends and family with them.

Chet, Chester Enstrom

Chet’s specialty? Almond Toffee!

The Enstrom LogoChet had been known for his treats and upon the insistence of many folks, what started out as a hobby, became a business and a Legend (in my eyes at least). Enstrom’s was born. The birth year of this legend was 1960, to some of you it would be long long time ago, to me, well lets just say that I turned 50 just a few weeks ago. 🙂

By 1965 Enstrom’s Candies were being shipped worldwide!

What happened to Chet?

Chet sold his company to his Son and daughter-in-law as Chet had decided to pursue his political carrier in the Colorado State Senate. And in 1966 Chet was appointed Colorado State Senator!

The Enstrom family has continued this legendary company still today

And the handmade candy making continues to this very day, some 53 years later, including the making of Chet’s Enstrom’s Almond Toffee… the product is still all natural.

Enstroms Almond Toffee BoxEnstrom’s, to my surprise, found my new blog location online and contacted me with a tasty offer that I just could not refuse, they asked me if I would like to review a 1 pound box of Enstrom’s Almond Toffee. I was lucky enough to have received my box the day after my 50th birthday, the birthday was a nothing event, but surprisingly after receiving Enstrom”s Almond Toffee, I felt a celebration coming on!

Enstrom Almond Toffee second part of box

The Almond Toffee, is unlike anything I’ve ever tasted before, the crunch is just right in these tasty treats, as they seemed to break easily, melt in my mouth and have the perfect amount of the wonderful Almonds not only mixed in, but also ground into almost a powder and placed all over the milk chocolate topping. I am a choco-holic and the perfect amount of chocolate was on top.

Finally to the Almond Toffee from EnstromsAfter experiencing the Almond toffee, I found myself pouring what was left into my hands, just like a little piggy I dumped the crumbs of almonds into my mouth and savored the remnants, as I look into the box, that once held the precious Almond Toffee in amazement of how fast I emptied the box. I admit it, I now crave Enstrom’s Almond Toffee and I want to do another review each and every month! 🙂 Hey they have sugar free Almond Toffee and oh boy, TRUFFLES???? Who could say no to truffles, NOT ME!  Oh how I’d love to try so many of their products!

I have seen that they have several shops here in Colorado, one not too far away from me in Arvada and they offer their sweet confections there as well as ice cream and this summer they will have coffee in this shop as well! Yay, I cannot wait to visit them and taste their ice cream and bring home some of their sweets for eating later and perhaps sharing. Or freezing so I can gift them to others, or even try them very cold in the summer heat! 🙂

Now onto the giveaway one of you lucky ducks will receive a one pound box of Enstrom”s Almond Toffee… to share with me! Okay you don’t have to share, I was just kidding, but really? Didn’t your Mothers teach you to share? Mine did, but I must admit, I didn’t share either… so there! 😛

Good Luck Folks!
