Skin Care System – Spa Sonic Review & Sale (4/30/13)

I was contacted by Spa Sonic to test out their Sonic Skin Care System (AKA: Sonic Face and Body Polisher) and, you know me (well most of you do) I jump on the chance to review products that fit into my Cosmetology knowledge (Hair, Skin and Nails), beauty and beauty tools.

Spa Sonic Skin Care System Box

Your first question, if you’ve read my review and how to with manual and mechanical skin care systems (along with the product that I found to be the best system at the time of the writing of that post) in the past should be, “Well, what’s the major difference, between this and the other system?” The difference here is that this Skin Care System is Sonic. What does Sonic mean when it comes to these systems? Sonic is a specific sonic vibration/sound that helps to clean better and make products like this Skin Care System penetrate better. I received the Spa Sonic, Sonic Skin Care System and immediately started to use it so that I could get this review out ahead of their sale date (more about the sale later in this post). The Sonic Skin Care System box contains, 2 Facial Brushes (both are so wonderfully gentle), 1 large Body Brush, 1 Facial Buffer (a really supper soft sponge for after cleansing and application of your Moisturizer) and a really gentle pumice stone and of course the Sonic Unit that all these attachments go on. The 4 AA Batteries required are included too. Also inside the box you will find a 30 day Money Back Warranty, the place to register your unit and an instruction manual.

Now when I went to put the batteries in, I thought for sure I knew how since on the handle of the unit, it had in raised print “Open” and so I kept trying to pull off the end… then I tried squeezing it. My husband looked at me laughing, then I realized how silly I looked. I won’t say much more then that end of the unit is rather phallic looking and I knew by my husband’s eyes what he was thinking, so as I handed it to him, he did say “trust me I have more experience with this sort of thing than you do.” I burst into laughter and stated that perhaps I need to say that you need the guy around the house or a guy friend to open this for you. Ok enough of that, after reading the instructions out loud, and grabbing the unit from my husband, and failing to open it again, I handed it back over and made sure to repeat that the instructions say “Minimal pressure during pulling of the cap. It is more easily pulled off.” And woolahhh my husband had the cap off in a moment.

Inserting the batteries was easy enough as you can see markings, once the cap is open telling you where the + and – ends go… nice that you don’t have to refer to the instructions each time you accidentally pull out the batteries to replace them and forget to take note of how they were inserted… this is something I do on a regular basis and I’ve had skin care systems with brushes that didn’t even bother to leave you a clue as to how the batteries go in. Well I do have to say that this skin care system is much newer than the one I tried, that I believe was from Avon or some such (an ugly green thing) that didn’t even work for one whole facial wash, and that was back about 8 years ago when these things were first coming out.

I have tried several systems like this in the past, I have to say that I love the fact that this comes with 2 facial brushes, you can use one for the 2 or 3 months and then use the other so no worry about replacements until 4 to 6 months later or you can shave the unit with someone else, just get out the ol’ nail polish and mark the 2nd one with it… towards the brush side of the brush head, so you can readily see it. This nail polish idea will work great to help you also keep track of what brush you are saving for use in 2 to 3 months down the road.

Removing the attachments, especially the sponge like attachment from the plastic insert, should be done by pushing in on the plastic below it. This way you easily remove the attachments and for the delicate sponge attachment you don’t rip it or pull off the sponge.

Me (Mariah) Preparing to Use her Spa Sonic Skin Care System
Me Preparing to use my Sonic Skin Care System, make sure to get all the hair secured away from you face before you use this system.

Remember to get all your hair out of your face before you use the system. When you use these systems, especially with the sonic units, I recommend a gentle liquid wash for cleansing.  I also recommend that you first do a light wash of your face before using the unit for deep cleansing… just because I like the idea of getting off some of the surface impurities first before you use the brush (thus you are just pushing around the impurities from the deeper cleaning and not the surface, such as makeup etc). This way you also keep your brushes cleaner so you may rinse well after use easily and not have to clean the brush by disturbing the bristles by rubbing back and forth on your hand.

I did notice that the facial brushes with this skin care system were about 20% smaller then the last system I reviewed and have been using. And I admit that I actually like these smaller brush heads more… I like them more because they catch all the facial angles of the face more easily and I actually found it easier to keep the brush flush with the face for me. And this brush and unit are sonic in it’s cleaning and for me I can actual feel that my face feels much more stimulated and as a result it’s tingly even a while after use.

Please remember not to push in with your Unit, like any of the others, just hold the brush or attachment flat to the surface and let it gently glide over the surface. I have read some about people bearing one when they use some of these types of Skin Care Systems and that should NEVER BE DONE, if you hear the motor in it working harder then you are pushing down on the unit too much. Think of feathery touches, more and harsher exfoliation etc doesn’t mean it’s better as a matter of fact you can damage your unit as well as your skin!

The little sponge like attachment is so very soft, I don’t know if this is made with latex or not…so if you have a problem with latex you may want to think twice about using this product… however I don’t use it with too direct a contact to my skin as I use my moisturizer on the sponge. I like using this soft little sponge as it adds a delicate microdermabrasion for your skin as it helps the moisturizer sink into you skin more. For me the moisturizer sunk in much better than the plain rotating brush from my past review (it wasn’t sonic), so I use moisturizer with this one and I actually feel a big difference in my skin.

Use the Sponge Head with your moisturizer.

I love to use the body brush, this too is very gentle but has the extra cleaning action of the sonic action of this Skin Care System. And the pumice stone has a nice gentle texture to it as well, helping to exfoliate those rough areas, it’s gentle enough to use on those elbows and knees as well as your feet! I really like that and recommend using this before application of instant tanning lotions that we all should be applying if we want to look tan (please avoid the sun and use sunscreen daily) as the exfoliating will help make sure that your knees and elbows won’t be too dark when you apply your instant tanning lotion.

I have found this Sonic Skin Care System to work wonderfully on my skin and much more efficiently then the last system that I tried that just has rotating brushes. This system may cost more than the ones that weren’t sonic and were basically just a rotating brush, but I feel that this Spa Sonic Skin Care System is well worth the price… don’t get me wrong this skin care system is still much cheaper then the Clarisonic ones out there.

Spa Sonic Gifts with Bows on the boxes
Before I close I have been asked for my recommendations for facial cleansing and moisturizing by others and here is what I use on my skin, keep in mind that my skin is normal with combination areas through out (and that I just turned 50 on the 22nd of this month) so what I use may not work for you. Here is what I use:

Olay Foaming Face Cleanser for Sensitive Skin. It is fragrance-free, oil-free and soap-free (again I don’t recommend bar soap cleansers, it can stiffen your brushes prematurely, so I recommend a gentle liquid cleanser). And Regenerist Moisturizer from Olay (you will notice the moisturizer in a picture above).
